  • Fannie Bay Gaol

One of Darwin’s historic sites is the Fannie Bay Gaol, which operated for almost 100 years as Her Majesty’s Gaol and Labour Prison. Fannie Bay Gaol was Darwin’s main prison up until 1979 where the gaol is now one of the city’s main attractions.

The gaol has original buildings, including 16 cells, a kitchen, and a washhouse. In 1920, the women’s cells were built, and the block featured a small garden for the women prisoners.
