Can you swim at Tolmer Falls?

Tolmer Falls is one of the most popular waterfalls in Litchfield in the Northern Territory.

Tolmer Falls is one of the biggest waterfalls in Litchfield National Park. Litchfield is about a 90 minute drive from Darwin. It is not allowed to go swimming in Tolmer Falls. You take a walk and can see the waterfall from two viewing platforms. Both platforms are at the top of the gorge which is opposite Tolmer Falls. The walk is 1.6 kilometres which take about 45 minutes. This walk takes you along Tolmer Creek, a tributary and by rock pools. Or take a shorter 400 metre walk from the carpark to reach a viewing platform. The best time to see Tolmer Falls is during the wet season. This is when any waterfall is flowing the best because of the additional water from the rain.

What other waterfalls can I swim in?

Litchfield National Park has plenty of other waterfalls you can swim in. And they are as beautiful as Tolmer Falls. Check online if they are open for swimming as they can close due to seasonal weather conditions.

Wangi Falls

Wangi Falls is a large waterfall in Litchfield. It is perfect for swimming because of the deep water and the location. At this waterhole, you can swim up to the falls, but you are not allowed to swim above the falls. Wangi Falls is easy to get to as there is a path down to the falls from the car park. When getting into the water there is a handrail with a few steps. But be careful as the water becomes deep very quickly. Wangi Falls offers a nearby cafe with a selection of food and drinks to enjoy.

Florence Falls

Florence Falls is one of the more popular swimming holes in Litchfield. The best time to go to Florence Falls is during the wet season and the start of the dry season when the fall flows the best. The waterhole itself is large and perfect for swimming. Same as Wangi Falls, you can swim right up to the falls. There is also Florence Creek at the top of Florence Falls where you can swim in. To get to Florence Falls you can take a short path or do a one kilometre walk.

Buley Rockhole

Buley Rockhole isn’t a waterfall, but it still allows swimming when it’s safe. This rockhole is preferable for relaxing and lounging around the water streams. There are smaller deep pools or shallow rock pools to relax. Buley Rockhole and Florence Falls share the same path to reach both swimming holes. Buley Rockhole is the first turn.
