Litchfield National Park is an Australian national treasure, with stunning waterfalls, tranquil natural pools and an awe-inspiring landscape drawing people from across the world.

Litchfield National Park, Darwin

No visit to Darwin is indeed complete without taking the short drive south to this ancient wonder, and visitors leave feeling reinvigorated by the dramatic landscape.

One of the park’s permanent residents is the saltwater crocodile, or the “salty” as they’re otherwise known. But you shouldn’t let that put you off, and let us tell you why: salties enter the region during the monsoonal season (October – April), when most of the park’s incredible sites are inaccessible.

When the wet season ends, the sites reopen, but before that happens, park rangers survey the region to ensure none of these scaly beasts are still hanging around. Swimming is one of the best activities in Litchfield National Park, and is considered safe for tourists.

But! You should always stick to the designated swimming regions, as these are the spots that have been checked for salties before being opened to tourists. Besides, the places where the best swimming takes place (under the falls and in the waterholes), are croc-free and ready to provide you with the ultimate post-trek refreshment.

So now that we’ve got that out of the way, let’s take a look at some of the other amazing experiences in the Litchfield National Park and why it’s such an unforgettable place to visit.

Explore this magnificent region

Litchfield National Park is an incredibly diverse and unique place to visit, with the breathtaking falls and waterholes just one of the park’s attractions. Before or after a swim, you’ll probably want to go for a wander, and there is just so much to see in the park.

Meander at your own pace around historic ruins, otherworldly giant termite mounds and follow the lush paths that make this national park such a miraculous location. Be sure to make your way to the Lost City: an astounding collection of rock formations that have taken their place after countless years of erosion. There is something mystical about visiting this particular landmark, and makes for a stark contrast to the joyous fun to be had at the falls.

Litchfield National Park is one of the most unbelievable experiences you can have Down Under, and with the crocs taking off in time for some fun in the sun, why not take the time to head out to this once-in-a-lifetime location?
