Litchfield National Park is an Australian national treasure.

Litchfield National Park, Darwin

Dotted with stunning waterfalls, tranquil natural pools and a scenic landscape, Litchfield National Park draws in people from all across the world. No visit to Darwin is indeed complete without taking the short drive south to this ancient wonder. After visiting, travellers leave feeling reinvigorated by the dramatic landscape.

Aside from the gorgeous scenery, you may be curious about what types of animals reside in the national park. More specifically, you are probably wondering if there are crocodiles. The answer is yes.

When to keep an eye out

One of the park’s permanent residents is the saltwater crocodile, or the “salty” as they’re otherwise known. As their name suggests, they like to relax in seawater and they are also the largest reptile in the world. But you shouldn’t let that put you off if you’re visiting Litchfield National Park. Salties enter the region during the monsoonal season (October – April), when most of the park’s incredible sites are inaccessible. When the wet season ends, the sites reopen. Before that happens, park rangers survey the region to ensure none of these scaly beasts are still hanging around.

Can you still go swimming?

Yes! Swimming is one of the best activities in Litchfield National Park, and is considered safe for tourists. However, you should always stick to the designated swimming regions. These are the spots that have been checked for salties before being opened to tourists.

Some of the most incredible swimming areas include fresh waterfalls and cool swimming holes. If you’re visiting during the dry season, be sure to check out Buley Rockhole, Florence Falls, and Wangi Falls.

  • Buley Rockhole

Buley Rockhole is the perfect spot to sit and relax as the water flows over you. During the wet season, this area is prone to flooding, so it is best to visit during the dry season. The calm rockpool is a great spot for visitors of all ages to sit and splash in the sun!

  • Florence Falls

Florence Falls is one of the most popular sites in Litchfield National Park. If you have seen a photo of the national park, you have most likely seen a photo of Florence Falls. The dry season is the perfect time to go swimming in the calm waters at the base of the waterfall. It doesn’t hurt that Florence Falls also makes the perfect backdrop for your photos!

  • Wangi Falls

Wangi falls is another popular waterfall to visit in the national park. This waterfall separates into two cascades, ending in a large pool at the bottom. This location offers great swimming and picture-perfect scenery. So now that we’ve got that out of the way, let’s take a look at some of the other amazing experiences in the Litchfield National Park.
