Nitmiluk (Katherine) Gorge has dramatic landscapes and is worth seeing during your trip to the territory.
Nitmiluk Gorge is a large area and has 13 deep gorges that have been carved through the sandstone by Katherine River. Nitmiluk Gorge is about a three-hour drive from Darwin and can be done on a day trip or you can spend a night in the area.
But what about the Nitmiluk Gorge cruise, and is it worth it? We certainly think this cruise is worth it! The two-hour scenic cruise is truly stunning where you can see the incredible landscapes, the tall cliffs, and a range of local wildlife to spot. There is a chance to learn more about the local Aboriginal people and the history of the area.
The best time to see the gorge is between May to September in the dry season. You will avoid the rain in the dry season and still experience the sunny days. You can still do the cruise in the wet season, it will likely rain but there are fewer people around.
Other ways to see Nitmiluk Gorge
Aside from a cruise, there are many ways to see Nitmiluk Gorge and the national park.
Walk
Go by foot and explore Nitmiluk Gorge and surrounding areas on the Baruwei and Southern Walks. The Southern Walks are more challenging, and you should only do these if you are well prepared.
The Baruwei Walks are easier with the Lookout Walk being about an hour long and the Loop Walking being about around two hours to complete.
Canoe
Canoeing is a similar experience to going on a cruise, but you can go at your own pace. The canoe rides are a great way to see the local wildlife, view the waterfalls, and a chance to swim in some of the crystal-clear freshwater pools.
There are canoe tours available where all the equipment is provided.
Helicopter ride
Being in a helicopter gives you a very different vantage point of Nitmiluk Gorges and is available all year round. The flight time varies depending on how many gorges you plan to see and if you have selected any upgrades (if optional).
Experience for yourself and see how breathtaking Katherine Gorge is and book a deluxe tour! The tour leaves from Darwin with a few stops along the way before you go on your two-hour cruise!
